Safety & Instructions

Essential Oil Safety

*For individuals who are currently under their doctor's care or for women who are pregnant, it is important that you speak to your medical professional before you do begin the use of essential oils for any treatment plan or regime you have in mind. Also please speak with your doctor or physician before applying any essential oils to a child.

Essential oils can safely be used for a number of conditions, but when using essential oils there are a few safety guidelines to be aware of.

Only therapeutic grade oils should be used and it is important to read warning labels prior to use.

A vegetable oil (such as coconut oil) should be applied immediately if redness or pain occurs on application sites.

Avoid using on the eyes, ear canal, or on open wounds. If contact with eyes is made a carrier oil should be applied. Water won't help, and in an emergency milk can be used. If severe headaches ensue or pain continues it is important to see medical attention.

These essential oils should never be ingested. If stomach, skin, respiratory, or other discomfort is noticed, discontinue use. We label all of our oils to tell you what the recommended uses are: Topical or Aromatic.

If used on kids use a small amount to test sensitivity. Avoid contact with hands, eyes, and mouth. And, if you are pregnant or under your doctor's care, contact your doctor prior to use.

Therapeutic grade oils are highly concentrated and users should take reasonable care in application. Consulting with an experienced individual can make use more enjoyable. And, as you progress with the oils it is also important to share this knowledge with others.

When properly stored these oils can retain a shelf life for a period of 5 to 15 years. Citrus oil is an exception which only lasts for 6 to 12 months, unless refrigerated in which case it can last up to 2 years. You should store the oils out of your children's reach as they are dangerous if ingested.

When applying these oils it is best to dilute them prior to direct application to the skin. Rather, combining them with real oils (carrier), wax, butter, or alcohols, is the safest way to apply them. An unfortunate reaction may occur if they are not properly diluted prior to being applied to different areas of the skin.

Diluting for massages:

When using for a massage make sure to dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil to avoid injury to the skin. There are a few oils which can be used and are safe if they aren't diluted. But, there are a few exceptions to the rule. Many professionals points out that: lavender, geranium, chamomile, sandalwood, and melaleuca oils can be used safely without first being diluted. *Always test on a small area of skin mixed with 1/2 a drop of carrier oil first.

Undiluted oils should never be used on a child or baby. Their skin is thinner and more fragile than that of an adult which can result in injury or an adverse reaction to their skin. That is all they need (This list includes oils which can be used for children and babies).

When pregnant or nursing certain oils should be avoided. Namely during the first trimester essential oils should be avoided all together. Speak to your doctor or physician to see which essential oils are allowed after your first trimester.

To test sensitivity to an oil combine one drop of the essential oil with 1/2 a drop to a carrier oil. Rub this on the upper area of your arm on the inside portion. After a few hours if there is no itching or redness it is likely safe to use. You should keep these oils out of reach of children and avoid contact with the eyes.

It is best to use the oils externally and to avoid internal ingestion of essential oils.
